Dexter Girl’s Soccer lost two key players from this past season. With the upcoming 2020 season, it has been up in the air due to the restrictions of COVID-19. We are hoping with the five seniors, four returning players and one player who has come back, will lead the team in these uncertain times. With a large upcoming underclassmen group, coaches are hoping they will step up to the plate and fill crucial roles on the field.
Returning seniors leading the team are Peyton Grant, Abby Wakefield, Olivia, Peakes, and Jade Wintle. Cheyenne Beem is also returning back to soccer for her senior year, after not playing for four years. These five girls have been playing sports together since elementary school. The five girls are hopeful for a successful season, even without playoffs this season, they are going to play every game with the same aggression and passion that they have played with in years past.
Wakefield says, “We have a large underclassmen group and I am hoping they will really step up this year. I feel they will play a huge role on this team.”
With a big underclassmen group, coaches and upperclassmen are relying on them to step up this season. Some returning sophomores that got varsity time last year are Jillean Poliquin, Sydney Dyson, Sydney Fogler, Aleaha Richards, and Jozlynn Page. Last year they improved immensely and we are only hoping for them to continue to grow and get better. Some freshmen coming up, that the team is expecting some big things from, are Macey Deering, Hannah Dean, and Callie Gudroe.
With a modified schedule and season this year, the Dexter Girls’ will be playing some new opponents. Past rivals that the Tigers have faced off with in the past that they expect to be competitive again are Dover and Central. This season, the girls will also be playing Hermon, who was Class B State Champs last year. Last year the Dexter girls’ had a growing season and are hoping to come back stronger this season.
With a late start and only being able to do contact for two weeks now, coaches are still figuring out positions and roles for the team. This season will be very different from years past, but coaches expect their players to adapt quickly and overcome any challenges they may face in the upcoming season.
